Auld Lang Syne - 2021
It's been a good year! I passed my second year at Red Hat. They say you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Working with Andrew Clay Shafer, Jabe Bloom, and Kevin Behr has raised my average in every category. I've made some new friends this year. Due to the pandemic, it was hard to stay in touch with many old friends. I also spoke at a few conferences again (virtually). I also appeared on some podcasts. During his last year at Georgia Tech, my oldest son, William, moved into a loft in Downtown Atlanta. My youngest son, Daniel, graduated high school and started college at Auburn University. Vicki and I bought a new house in Auburn in January, and we should close on it in January 2022. We enjoyed spending time with Alan Shimel and the gang in New York City for a Yankees game and Adrian and Laurel Cockcroft on Maui. We also attended a retrospective of an old friend, Richard Mock, while in New York. We received our first two COVID shots in April and our boosters in November. So far, knock on wood, only Daniel has contracted the virus, during his first week of college, of course.
On the work side, I have focused primarily on security and DevSecOps. I've been working closely with another Red Hat employee, Bill Bensing, to implement what we call DevOps Automated Governance. Professionally, I'm getting closer to my white whale, my Deming book. As a result, I've created a podcast series called "Profound" and a new blog site with the same name. The Profound podcast had 6k downloads after nine months in December. In March 2022, my Deming book should be ready for final editing. In November, the second edition of the DevOps Handbook was released. In addition, I am working on an IT Revolution book titled Investments Unlimited. It should be published next summer. I have advised three startups, Verica, TringgerMesh, and TechStong Group.
