Book Review: The Line: AI and the Future of Personhood, James Boyle

Over the past year, I have read around 20 books related to the history of AI as part of my research for my upcoming book, Rebels of Reason, which is set to be published in the first quarter of next year. One recent book I read was intriguing, but I do not plan to cover it in my own book. I must admit that I read it quite quickly; however, I find the topic fascinating and believe it might interest the readers of this newsletter. As I get closer to the publication date of Rebels of Reason, I will be sharing more of my thoughts on my favorite books concerning the history of AI.

In The Line: AI and the Future of Personhood, James Boyle embarks on a thought-provoking exploration of the moral, philosophical, and legal challenges that artificial intelligence (AI) and other synthetic entities will bring to our understanding of what it means to be a person. Published by MIT Press, this book poses challenging questions about the boundaries of humanity and legal personhood at a time when AI and genetic engineering push those limits.

Boyle begins by grounding readers in contemporary debates, drawing on current and historical examples to highlight how evolving technologies blur distinctions between "persons" and "things." He recounts critical incidents, such as the controversial statement by Google engineer Blake Lemoine, who claimed Google’s AI LaMDA was sentient, which serves as a springboard for Boyle’s discussion of personhood. His narrative delves into areas as diverse as the ethics of human-animal hybrids, corporations as “artificial persons,” and the role of empathy in defining humanity.

A particularly engaging feature of the book is its hypothetical scenarios involving Hal, an advanced AI, and Chimpy, a transgenic chimera with human-like traits. Through these examples, Boyle addresses technical advances and probes deeper, contemplating how society, law, and even individual morality will respond to these artificial entities if they claim autonomy and rights.

The book has five main sections, each focusing on a specific entity or concept that could challenge legal and moral boundaries. Boyle’s analysis is scholarly yet accessible, making complex ideas like the Turing Test, empathy in AI, and the parallels to historical struggles for human rights both comprehensible and compelling.

James Booyle references Philip K. Dick's *Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?* in his book. In my research on the history of AI, I find *Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?*—and its film adaptation, *Blade Runner*—particularly intriguing. This work explores a recurring theme in the development of AI: our evolving understanding of personhood, empathy, and the ethical boundaries between humans and artificial beings. By presenting androids that are nearly indistinguishable from humans yet denied moral consideration, Dick’s narrative examines our changing perceptions of AI as it advances. This exploration raises a fundamental question in the history of AI: as we create entities that increasingly replicate human qualities, how do we define and redefine the line between human and machine? This nuanced portrayal resonates deeply with AI's technical and ethical trajectory, as it highlights society’s complex relationship with synthetic life.

The Line ultimately calls for addressing these issues before they disrupt societal norms preemptively. Boyle's engaging style and extensive knowledge offer readers an insightful look into a near-future world where technology and personhood might intersect in ways that challenge everything we know about identity, rights, and ethics.
