The 40-70 Rule

Exceptional leaders combine intuition with probabilities to make the best decisions. Colin Powell formulated a rule called the 40-70 rule. The 40-70 rule requires leaders to make decisions that can be followed up with 40-70% of the required knowledge. Leadership decisions are made based on intuition when leaders reach this level. It has been proven that the best leaders are the ones who make big decisions in a highly effective manner.

Using the 40-70 rule involves two-way decision-making. The first step is to analyze your accuracy percentage. To better understand where you fall within the 40-70 range, Powell introduced the formula 'P = 40 to 70'. Success is determined by P, and the numbers represent information obtained. The range from which you think you fit will depend on the data you have. The second part is to trust your intuition. It's up to a leader's intuition to decide when they reach the upper and lower limits between 40% and 70%. Powell also points out that waiting until 70% might be too late. The best leaders are born because it's not just about data and probabilities but also about gut instinct.
