Why Deming Matters in Transporation

When it comes to Deming, I have noticed that there are three categories. Firstly, they are superfans like me; secondly, they have heard of him but don't know why he matters; and thirdly, they have never heard of him. According to my conversations, most people I meet fall into the second category. Deming's Journey to Profound Knowledge covers his life and learning journey. I thought a "Why Deming Matters" series in different industries would be a helpful way to educate people about his management philosophy.

Deming and Transporation

Deming's quality management principles can be applied to transportation to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and minimize errors. A streamlined and effective transportation system can be achieved through Total Quality Transporation (TQT) and continuous improvement. Here are some of the reasons Deming matters in transportation:

Coordination

Coordination issues or disintegration between departments can lead to costly rework, unnecessary duplication of effort, and significant resource losses.

Total Quality Transportation (TQT)

Total Quality Transporation (TQT) is an organizational structure and implementation model intended to improve transportation systems that incorporate quality management based on 14 points developed by Deming.

Quality

According to Deming, quality lies in the hands of leadership rather than individual employees. He stressed quality at every step of the process.

Continuous Improvement

Deming's concept of continuous improvement can be applied to transportation by reducing waste, improving efficiency, and minimizing errors.

Minimizing Total Cost

Companies should minimize their costs according to Deming's management method. A single supplier may be chosen as an example.

Efficiency

By reducing errors, reducing waste, and improving department coordination, Deming's quality management principles can improve transportation systems.

Resistance to Change

As a result of Deming's principles, transportation systems may need to undergo significant changes. Implementing a change can be challenging when employees and stakeholders resist it.
